Is the black cat clapping meme real?
Partly. The black cat is a real pet, but the toothy human grin and the human hands that clap were added with AI. It is not a trained cat and not a person in a costume.

What is real
The cat, the room and the moment: the creator merkurianin is giving the cat some food when it sits up. The original was posted on Instagram on the twenty-fifth of September and also shared on TikTok.
What is AI
The human grin, the human hands and the slow clap (and the handshake the cat offers) were generated or edited with AI video. That is why the hands look so oddly human.
Why so many people asked
The edit is smooth and the cat looks natural, so the clip passed two and a half million likes in just over a week, and the comments filled up with people asking whether the cat was real.
